The origins of the Lions

The British & Irish Lions began in 1888, when a group of 22 players embarked on a 46-day journey to tour of Australia and New Zealand. During the tour, they played 35 rugby fixtures, winning 27.

The tour was marked by both sporting success and tragedy. Midway through, Skipper Robert Seddon, tragically drowned in an accident on the Hunter River in New South Wales. The team chose to carry on and honour their fallen captain by completing the tour with distinction.

Why are the Lions so iconic?

What began as a bold sporting adventure in the late 19th century quickly grew into one of rugby’s greatest traditions – a celebration of the best players from 4 great rugby nations coming together, and not in rivalry. That spirit lives on in every tour, and in every fan who wears the red.

What games are the Lions playing?

In June, the British & Irish Lions will play Argentina in the legendary 1888 Cup Match at home in Dublin, before setting off on Tour.

Then, for the first time in eight years, the British and Irish Lions return to Australia to play three Test matches and seven Pre-Test matches.
