Rugby Body Armour Technology: Why Should You Wear It?

Rugby is a collision sport. Every tackle, ruck, maul and carry asks something of your body, and over the course of a season those contacts add up. That is exactly why rugby body armour has become a staple in kit bags from grassroots clubs to the professional game.

At Gilbert, we have been part of rugby since 1823, and looking after the players who love the game is something we take seriously. Our body armour is built using the latest materials and design technology, developed with feedback from players who put it to the test every week.

So, what actually goes into modern rugby body armour, and why should you be wearing it? Let's break it down.

1. What Is Rugby Body Armour?

Rugby body armour, sometimes called shoulder pads or padded vests, is a close-fitting top with foam padding built into key impact zones. Depending on the model, that padding can cover the shoulders, chest, sternum, biceps, ribs, kidneys and back.

It is designed to be worn under your rugby shirt, so it sits close to the body without adding bulk. Every piece of armour must meet World Rugby's regulations on padding thickness and density, which means it is approved for both training and match day.

Gilbert body armour ranges from streamlined three-pad vests for players who want something lightweight, through to models with 12 or more pads for those who want maximum coverage. Not sure where to start? Our Body Armour Guide walks you through every option.

2. Why Should You Wear Rugby Body Armour?

Body armour is not compulsory in rugby, but there are plenty of reasons why players at every level choose to wear it.

Minimising impacts. Contact always puts stress on your body. Gilbert body armour is designed to absorb and spread the force of regular contact, helping to reduce the knocks your shoulders and torso take in every session.

Recovery between sessions. The gap between a Saturday fixture and Tuesday training is short. Reducing the impact on your body during contact means you have a better chance of recovering properly and arriving at the next session ready to go again.

Returning from injury. Coming back from a knock can play on the mind. Many players find that wearing body armour helps them rebuild confidence and ease back into full contact training.

Confidence on the pitch. When you feel prepared, you commit fully. Body armour lets you focus on the tackle in front of you, not the bruises you might pick up afterwards.

Body armour is just one part of looking after yourself on the pitch. Good technique, proper conditioning and listening to your coaches and medical staff always come first.

3. Rugby Body Armour Technology Explained

Not all body armour is built the same. Here is a look at some of the technology that goes into the Gilbert range.

Layered padding. Our newest Vapour Vest features Gilbert's first layered padding system. The Vapour 5-25 shoulder padding delivers advanced impact absorption while keeping bulk to an absolute minimum, so you can hit every contact at full pace.

3D moulded triangular system. The classic Gilbert Triflex system uses interlocking foam triangles that move with your body, giving excellent coverage and freedom of movement.

EVA Pro-XP padding. EVA foam padding with minimal gaps between the foam and the fabric cover, adding extra cushioning across the shoulders.

Flexible zone padding. Interlocking oval-shaped shoulder pads with a cavity zone inside, reducing weight and increasing flexibility.

FastWickX fabric. A breathable, moisture-managing fabric that pulls sweat away from the skin to keep you dry and cool, even late in the second half.

Compression and 4-way stretch fabrics. The body of the garment stretches both vertically and horizontally, so the armour stays close to your body and moves with you through every tackle.

Silicone hem grip. Silicone beading at the hem holds the armour in place, so it does not ride up during contact.

4. Choosing the Right Body Armour for You

The right body armour depends on your position, your playing style and how much coverage you want.

For speed and agility. Backs and players who value freedom of movement often prefer a lighter, sleeveless option. The Vapour Vest Body Armour uses a three-pad system with internal airflow channels and ventilation slots for outstanding breathability. Senior sizes also include a GPS pouch with HD EVA lining.

For all-round value. The XP100 offers padding across the shoulders and arms with a contoured fit suitable for both male and female players. It is made from 100% recycled polyester, created from plastic bottles collected from the ocean.

For maximum coverage. Forwards spending their afternoon in the tight exchanges may want more padding. The XP1000 features 12 strategically placed pads covering the biceps, sternum, kidneys and ribs, plus a large back pad for added confidence when tackling or being tackled.

For women's rugby. The Triflex Lite Women's body armour is anatomically designed for female players, using our 3D moulded triangular system to deliver flexibility and impact absorption without compromising fit.

For junior players. Many of our most popular models, including the Vapour Vest and XP100, come in junior sizes, so young players can build confidence in contact from the very start.

Whatever you choose, fit matters. Body armour should sit snugly against the body without restricting your breathing or movement. Check our size guides on each product page before you buy.
