As Scotland prepare for Rugby World Cup 2025, we got to know two of the players standing tall in the pack: Sarah Bonar and Elis Martin.

Read along as they share their stories, experiences, and top tips ahead of the tournament.

1.        Scotland’s road to the world stage

This summer marks Scotland’s seventh Rugby World Cup appearance since the tournament began in 1991, and their first back-to-back qualification since 2006 and 2010. With momentum from a WXV2 title and a strong performance at this year’s Six Nations, the team heads into the tournament with confidence.

Ahead of the tournament, Scotland will face Italy and Ireland in vital tests this summer, which will be a key part of preparation – offering a valuable opportunity to build cohesion and sharpen focus before their World Cup opening game against Wales on 23 August.

2.        Sarah Bonar

A Scotland Rugby international since 2016, Sarah Bonar has been a commanding presence in the second row ever since. Known for her physicality, discipline, and signature “power-braids”, Bonar has been crucial in Scotland’s recent successes.

Off the pitch, Sarah juggles her playing career with her duties as an RAF Flying Officer and in the RAF Police through the RAF’s Elite Athlete Programme, which allows her to train and play rugby full-time.

Her journey in rugby started when she was at Hartpury College as a rower. Hartpury is well-known for its rugby academy, and it was there that Sarah got to know Danielle Waterman. They crossed paths again at Loughborough University and “she ultimately was the one that got [Sarah] into rugby and suggested it would be a good thing for me to do!”

3.        Elis Martin

At just 26, Elis Martin has already carved out a key role in the Scotland squad since her 2022 debut. A product of BUCS rugby and now playing for Loughborough Lightning, she’s carved out a spot as a key hooker.

Elis’ advice to her younger self would be to “follow what you believe is right. Obviously, seek advice and support, but do what aligns with your morals and your values [because] the people that go the furthest are the people that stay true to themselves.”

Take a look at Elis’ top tips for the perfect lineout throw!

Scotland’s qualification for Rugby World Cup 2025 marks a significant moment for the team, as this tournament represents both a challenge and an opportunity to inspire the next generation of players. Their opening match against Wales on 23 August will be a key test.
