The final leg of another successful HMC Super 7s series sponsored by Gilbert Rugby took place at Hymers College on Saturday, with 12 teams taking part in a great day of rugby. Two Pools fought it out for a place in the final, with the winners going on to lift the trophy.
Pool 1 came down to a tussle between two teams, with Durham School and Barnard Castle School fighting for top spot. The crucial match between the two ended in Durham’s favour, claiming a 29-15 victory to seal their place in the showpiece match. Durham’s other results in the Pool were victories against Stonyhurst College (24-14), Hymers College (33-7), Yarm School (29-19) and Cheadle Hulme School (40-12)
Host school Hymers were involved in one of the matches of the day in Pool 1, drawing 26-26 with Yarm School in a thrilling contest.
RGS Newcastle and Sedbergh School were the top two in Pool 2. However, RGS won the crucial match between the two 31-12, and won their other fixtures, including the 41-0 victory over Bradford Grammar School which sealed their final berth. RGS’ other results were wins over Ampleforth College (38-7), Ashville College (48-0), Ermysteds GS (34-5).
So the final would be an all North-East affair, with RGS and Durham looking for the pride of the region. On this occasion it was RGS that claimed bragging rights, never allowing Durham in to the match and claiming a 26-5 victory and leaving Durham with the Steve Watson plate as runners-up.
