Gilbert partner with World Club 7s at Twickenham

Gilbert Rugby News — Published on August 12 , 2014

Gilbert Rugby are delighted to announce that we are the official ball of the World Club 7s at Twickenham on 16 and 17 August.

The announcement of this partnership further strengthens Gilbert’s position as the number one ball in world rugby. The Gilbert Synergie X3 Sevens specific match ball are used in eight out of nine of the HSBC IRB Sevens World Series legs, throughout the IRB Women’s World Sevens Series and were used in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014.

The World Club 7s is in its second year and after showcasing some of the biggest names in world 7s rugby in its first year, this year promises to be bigger and better attracting a bumper crowd to Twickenham.

The teams taking part are: Auckland, Buenos Aires, Cardiff Blues, DHL Western Province, Gloucester Rugby, Harlequins, Kuban Krasnodar, New York City 7s, RC Enisei, Seattle and Vodacom Blue Bulls.

New York – last year’s Plate Winners – have been handed the privilege of kicking off the tournament at 11.30am on Saturday, taking on Siberian side RC Enisei, while the heavyweight clash between Auckland and Super 15 Champions NSW Waratahs closes day one at 6.30pm.

In between thousands of fans will be treated to a feast of 19 different 7s rugby clashes that include an exhibition game between the Army and a Rugby for Heroes select side.

The knockout matches start at 11.30am on Sunday with the Final kicking off just after 5.30pm. The exhibition match on Sunday will see two top-class women’s teams (Premiership Storm and Premiership Thunder) meet for The Supporters Club Trophy.

“Gilbert have been a Premiership Rugby partner for more than 10 years and it is fantastic that our partnership has expanded to encompass the World Club 7s,” said Dominic Hayes, Commercial Director, Premiership Rugby.

“With a 40% increase in live TV audiences and a 3% rise in attendances at Aviva Premiership Rugby games last season, increasing numbers of people are watching club rugby and with the fast paced, try-laden action which will be on show at the World Club 7s this weekend it’s fitting that the teams will be playing with the number one ball in world rugby.”
