The inaugral Rugby Championship (formerly the Tri-Nations) kicked off on Saturday 18th August with South Africa hosting tournament new boys Argentina in Cape Town and Australia hosting neighbours New Zealand in Sydney.

The All Blacks kicked off the tournament proceedings with a 27-19 victory over Australia. The Wallabies - reigning champions after sealing victory in the final Tri-Nations last season - turned in an error-strewn display and failed to trouble the All Blacks in defence, notably passing up possession and territory at regular intervals. They did however, have Gilbert Brand Ambassador, Berrick Barnes to thank for 14 of there 19 points.

In the second game of the Championship, the Springboks entertained Argentina in their first major tournament match outside of Rugby World Cup. South Africa picked up an impressive 27-6 win, which was never in doubt for the Boks as they eased past the tournament newcomers.

The Rugby Championship continues this weekend, Saturday 25th August as Australia travel to Eden Park to play New Zealand and Aregntina welcome South Africa to Mendoza for the first time ever on home soil.
