Natwest Schools Finals 2014

Date posted: 17/04/2014

The NatWest Schools Cup is the premier tournament in schools rugby which sees school teams compete regionally and then nationally for the chance to play at Twickenham and clinch the coveted Schools trophy.

Over 1000 teams take part each year across the country at Under 15 and Under 18 level. All schools that enter play for the main cup and there is also a vase for teams knocked out in the early rounds, also culminating in a Twickenham final.

The 2014 Natwest Schools Finals day at Twickenham Stadium saw Gilbert represented in 3 out of 4 of the Finals taking part:

Trent College v Exeter College in the Under 18 Vase Final

Warwick School v QEGS Wakefield in the Under 15 Cup Final

Warwick School v Dulwich College in the Under 18 Cup Final

Trent College v Exeter College in the Under 18 Vase Final

The U18 Vase Final saw Gilbert team, Trent College, lift it's first ever Under 18 Vase as they held on for a nail-biting 17-16 victory. In an enthralling climax, the result was in the balance up until the last kick, as a late Exeter try meant that they had the chance to win the silverware with a conversion from the touch line. Unfortunately for them, but to the delight of the Trent College players, coaches and supporters the conversion attempt fell just short.

Warwick School v QEGS Wakefield in the Under 15 Cup Final

The U15 Cup Final saw Warwick School retain the title following a 17-0 victory over Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield. In a re-run of last year's finalists together, two late Warwick tries sealed the win after the game's opening score just before half-time. Retaining the title was a hugely impressive feat for the boys with RGS High Wycombe being the only other school to have retained the title, having held it for three years between 1996-98.

Warwick School v Dulwich College in the Under 18 Cup Final

In the finale to the finals day, Warwick School took on Dulwich College who were looking for their third finals day win in a row. In an unfortunately one sided final, Dulwich ran in 8 tries en route to an impressive 53-5 victory. Dulwich side entered the tournament in 2011 and, in what has become a somewhat staggering record, have yet to lose a game in the tournament at this level. The Warwick boys all did themselves proud though, throughout the tournament and were rewarded for their efforts when they finally got on the scoreboard 16 minutes from time, to the delight of their vocal fans.
